The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is experiencing fundraising for expansions to the facility. Expansions to the facility will include a riverfront pavilion, a pedestrian bridge linking the pavilion with the Kennedy center, as well as office and dining space. The largest donation has come from David M. Rubenstein. His donation has amounted to $50 million, which is by far the largest donation. The second largest donation was $20 million and it came from the Boeing Company. Jacqueline Mars donated $10 million. The David C. Bohnett Foundation donated $5 million and $1 million came from the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. Fundraising has exceeded initial expectations and the completed facility is expected to be complete by 2018.
As I previously discussed, Dick DeVos has a history of philanthropy. He has other charitable causes that he has contributed to. The charitable donations from Dick DeVos and his wife have totaled nearly $139 million. Dick DeVos is part of a family dynasty that has a strong history of philanthropy which goes back to his father. Estimates show that the DeVos family has donated nearly $1.33 billion dollars since the father founded the company.
Dick and Betsy DeVos both have a passion for reforming the school system in a way that makes the American dream more accessible for all children. Their commitment to charitable foundations, that encourage school choice, is an example of their vision and commitment. Dick DeVos school choice stance was formed when he decided that the current educational system was failing most poor American children.
